BASES

BASES (The British Association for Sport and Exercise Sciences) is the professional body for sport and exercise sciences in the UK.  Our mission is to drive excellence in sport and exercise sciences through the promotion of evidence-based practice and the development and enhancement of professional and ethical standards. This includes a number of services and support, including Membership, Accreditations and Certifications, Conferences and Events, Research and Publications, and Partnerships.

We have five Divisions (Biomechanics and Motor Behaviour; Physical Activity for Health; Physiology and Nutrition; Psychology; Sport and Performance) all of which contribute to the management of the Association.

BASES

Our flagship accreditation scheme is the Sport & Exercise Scientist Accreditation, which is a professional standard awarded to practitioners who are deemed by the Association to have demonstrated the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to practice safely, effectively and independently as a sport and exercise scientist.  For early career practitioners, we offer Supervised Experience, a programme of professional development, skill acquisition and supervised practice providing the environment and guidance to facilitate development as a sport and exercise science practitioner.  This programme can take two to six years to complete, with candidates on average taking three to four years to complete.  In January 2020, we launched the Sport and Exercise Psychology Accreditation Route (SEPAR), a programme of professional development, skill acquisition and supervised practice designed to ensure that candidates acquire the knowledge, skills, self-development and experience required to achieve BASES Accredited status. Those who achieve BASES Accreditation via SEPAR will be eligible for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Practitioner Psychologist. Once registered with the HCPC, members are able to use the protected title: Sport and Exercise Psychologist.

There are a number of benefits to BASES membership:

  • Keeping up to date with industry news and events
  • Division events and the BASES Annual and Student Conferences
  • Building your networks through BASES community of sport & exercise scientists
  • Enhancing your employability
  • Increasing your knowledge & skills
  • Saving money on books, courses and events

BASES members receive a range of exclusive benefits designed to support individuals at every stage of their career in Sport and Exercise Science.  Student membership starts from just £24 a year and Professional membership from £94

Our flagship events are our Annual and Student Conferences, both of which provide opportunities to:

  • Attend symposia, lectures and keynote presentations
  • Rub shoulders with world-leading experts, employers and leaders in the field
  • Present research to peers
  • Win one of our prestigious awards

BASES members receive reduced fees to attend industry-leading workshops around the country.  Experts deliver cutting-edge webinars on pertinent topics and issues in sport & exercise science.  Members also benefit from networking opportunities with leaders in the field of Sport & Exercise Science at the regular Division Days.

Regarding publications, The Sport & Exercise Scientist is a well-renowned quarterly publication and is available to BASES members.  The Guide to Careers in Sport and Exercise Science includes over 50 pages of guidance and information including career pathways and job profiles.
